If you would like to boost your career and to do your PhD in one of the largest centres for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Europe, then you are right to apply for a PhD position here.
The next application round will be for the IMPRS PhD program starting in September 2024.
The start and end of the application phase is displayed in the box on the right. In August 2023, the application portal will be reopened.

IMPORTANT INFO WHEN STARTING YOUR APPLICATION:
- For the online application, you need to upload several documents such as your CV, a PDF scan of your transcripts and certificates as well as a (preliminary) abstract of your master’s thesis or any other project work you have undertaken during your master’s degree studies. Please make sure, that your PDF documents (especially IELTS and TOEFL certificates, but also transcripts) are NOT password protected or encrypted pdf files. These will block the proper processing of the files and of your application.
- Further, you can enter up to three recommenders with their names, their titles (Professor, Dr....), and their e-mail addresses. They then will receive an automated e-mail asking them to upload a recommendation letter in support of your application (recommendation letter deadline is November 1, 2023 too!).
- The application form asks for personal data, such as date and place of birth, gender, nationality... This information is for internal administrative purposes only and will be disclosed to the selection committee for equal treatment reasons.
- In addition, the application form asks for a passport number. This is important for all candidates who need a visa for entry! Candidates with German or EU citizenship who can travel freely to Munich do not need to provide a passport number. The field can stay blank.
- All application files will be made available to the IMPRS potential supervisors beginning of December for review and evaluation. You may be among the candidates shortlisted for invitation to our Recruitment Workshop February 5-7, 2024. If you belong to the shortlisted candidates, we will inform you end of December until the beginning of January the very latest.
- Not being invited to the workshop does not mean that your application is rejected already. You might be contacted after the workshop for a second recruitment round. Only when all positions are filled we send an email out to everyone, that the application round is closed.
